1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup softened butter 1 cup molasses 1 cup hot water 2 tsp. soda 2 1/2 cups flour |
2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. cloves 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp salt 1 large beaten egg |
Cream the sugar and butter together. Dissolve the soda in the hot water and add to the molasses. Sift the dry ingredients together. Alternately add the dry mix and the liquid mix to the creamed butter-sugar mixture, beating after each addition. Beat in the beaten egg at the last, blending thoroughly. The batter will be thin.
Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 9"x13" cake pan and pour in the batter. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool in pan on a cooling rack.
