2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. sugar 3 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 cup shortening 1/2 cup grated old cheddar cheese |
3/4 cup milk
2 large apples 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tbsp. butter |
Heat oven to 400F. Grease a 9" round layer pan
Sift flour, sugar, salt and baking powder into a bowl. Add shortening and cut in finely. Add cheese and toss lightly with a fork. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead gently about 6 times to smooth and round up. Put dough into prepared pan and pat until it almost reaches the sides of the pan.
Peal apples, core and slice thin. Arrange slices petal fashion on top of dough. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples. Dot with butter. Bake about 30 minutes or until well browned. Serve warm.
